A RUBBER CITY REBEL ADVENTURE!!!
There is a great adventure heading to Akron! One thing is for sure this is an adventure that is going to rock your world as the Buzz Clic Adventure head to Ohio and will feature a special performance at Jilly’s Night Club in downtown Akron, Ohio. The first return to Akron since 2015 and will include a special appearance from the legendary Rubber City Rebels.
The Buzz Clic Adventure is a hard hitting rock band lead by Buzz Clic. The rest of his band includes Buzz Clic on gjitar and vocals; Bobby Clic on guitar, Earl Houston on bass & vocals, and Danny Gorman on drums. The band have been playing since 1990 performing hard rock original music. However, there is much more packed into this adventure than meets the ear! Buzz Clic is bringing together a special reunion from the legendary Akron music scene that was a buzz during the mid to late 70s with a special appearance of the Rubber City Rebels. Buzz was the lead guitaris of the Rebels along with Rod Bent on vocals, Pete Sake on keyboards and Stix Pelton on drums before adding Dave Zagar and Mike Hammer into the band. They made their mark with a historic appearance with the Dead Boys at CBGBs in 1977 and then opening the Crypt night club in Akron which featured original punk bands including Devo, Pere Ubu, the Dead Boys and the Rebels before moving to Los Angeles. The Rebels received support in a feature in Trowser Press Magazine from Robert Cristgau. They signed with Capitol Records in LA with the support of Doug Fieger who was lead singer of The Knack. Now the Buzz Clic Adventure and Rubber City Rebels will bring their energetic show to Jilly’s.
“Well the show Oct 6th @ Jilly’s Music Room, kicks off with Dave Hill & his Enablers followed by the Buzz Clic Adventure and instead of playing any extended encores we’re bringing up the members of the Rubber City Rebels to play a 3 or 4 song mini set to finish out the evening. The Rebels haven’t played a gig since 2015 in San Fransisco so for all you Rebels fans this is ultimate Rebels showcase.”
For anyone who has not had the chance to experience the Rubber City Rebels–this is your moment and for all the Rubber City Rebels fans of new and old….a great opportunity to absorb the memorable songs of the Rebels that live on in imortatality! And then the center of the performance is Buzz Clic and the Buzz Clic Adventure. It adds up to a double dose of great rock n roll!
“The Buzz Clic Adventure began in 1990/91 – the Rebels were on a prolonged hiatus and I found myself with a bunch of songs I’d written, I was in contact with my friend Phil Seymour and we went into the studio to record and start a possible band project. These recordings are available for download on all the popular streaming sites. As far as what inspires me, well I’m always noodling on my guitar and somehow with time, these become songs – so I guess the guitar is my ultimate source of inspiration. The Buzz Clic Adventure is a hard rock band, although we sometimes play in an aggressive style we are basically at the heart my version of American hard rock,” said Clic.
“I had been playing in a cover band (King Cobra) in NE Ohio, for a few years and I had begun to notice with the help of “Rock Scene” magazine these bands in New York called “punk rock” the first band to come to the Akron/ Cleveland area was “Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers” so we (Rod Firestone) and I went to the show and determined we could easily do that – so we decided to go with original music. This was quite a big step since we were making a living playing top 40 and there wasn’t much opportunity for original bands in the Akron area.”
The Rebels were in a place and time that offered a good opportunity to create a music scene and the opening of the Crypt gave the Rebels a base to play and brought in other bands who were ready to break out. “Well the timing was fortuitus in that we got the opportunity to manage our own club and the Crypt was born. It provided us all a place to get started and a great place to play…. we needed other bands to fill out the bills, so we got the Dead Boys the Bizarros Pere Ubu and of course Devo – although the Crypt was short lived it set me on a path I’m still on to this day. I started playing JB’s in Kent with my band “Bold Chicken” in 1971, we recorded original music way back then and the recordings are available on all the streaming sites as well, that music was pretty crude and more of a drunken frat house sing along, but there are a few funny moments that I still enjoy “Laundromat” and “Oh Dr. Please” (live) come to mind
Buzz is not about to slow down as he keeps his music alive and his band rocking. “I’m still at it – keeping a band together for all these years and touring with the Rebels whenever we got the chance has kept me busy. I have several songs recorded and a few more ready to go into the studio, so at some point there will be another release, maybe a vinyl 45 to start since I’ve never done a Buzz Clic Adventure single.”
Although Clic has lived in Southern California for years always enjoys returning to play in Akron where it all began. “I love playing in Akron – its “home” lots of friends and fans and family. I’m hoping for a great turn out since the Buzz Clic Adventure or the Rebels get so few gigs in the area any more. We still have enough energy to kick butt and we certainly enjoy reconnecting with our roots and all the people that helped us survive all these years!”
Speaking of memories over his long career, Buzz said, “All my memories are a jumble with so many gigs and pitfalls over the 50 years since I started…”its a long way to the top if you wanna rock & roll”
Be sure to mark your calander for the Akron show on October 6th which is a Sunday and an early appearance starting at 6 pm at Jilly’s. It is one show you do not want to miss!! Not only to hear Buzz Clic but to experience the Rubber City Rebels!
